“The mother of all recorded eruptions.”
Back in 1815, this volcano in Indonesia had a tremendous global impact, creating what has come to be referred to as the “year without a summer“. Aside from killing 100,000 people in Indonesia, Mount Tambora’s eruption caused the entire globe to cool and ash to fill up the atmosphere, resulting in a perpetual “fog” around the world. Frost hit New England in June and red snow fell in Italy.
NPR did some reporting on the obscurity of Tambora (the largest eruption in the past five-hundred years) and theorized on how exciting this still active volcano could help to fight the effects of global warming.
